Role of Offender Manager

During sentence, the offender manager will work with an offender management team and offender supervisors to co-ordinate individual intervention programmes, such as substance misuse or employment-related programmes. Interventions may take place whether the offender is serving a sentence in custody or in the community.

A single named offender manager will be responsible for the offender. This responsibility will include the offender manager assessing the offender in order to advise the court and to identify risk. This is achieved by using OASys (Offender Assessment System). OASys considers a range of risk factors that research has demonstrated are closely linked to risk of reconviction.

Needs associated with the wider environment, such as housing and employability, where the offender’s prospects are influenced by local and national trends are looked at. Aspects of the offender’s personality, attitudes and behaviours that are linked to offending are assessed.

When the full assessment of needs and risk is complete, a Sentence Plan is drawn up and Offender Managers must ensure all elements of this plan are enforced and they must review and evaluate the impact of these elements.
