North Wales Probation Area is committed to back Equal Opportunities, i.e. treating all people fairly whatever their race, religion, disability etc., and to the concept of Diversity, i.e. specifically seeking to value the differences between people. We try to reflect these concepts in both the make up of our staff and in everything we do.
Work on this issue is given a high priority and is lead by the Area’s Diversity Network, containing a mix of staff and representatives from external Diversity organisations. The Diversity Network is Chaired by a Board member, and supported by a Senior Manager.
Over the years, the Area has developed a wide range of policies and procedures around these two issues, which have been supported by extensive training programmes, in the main, aimed at all of our staff. We have high expectations of our performance on these issues and these expectations are re-enforced by our managers and supported by a network of Diversity Champions, one in every team, who aim to keep Diversity on the local agenda and offer advice when there is a potential for improvement.
We have close links with the North Wales Race Equality Network, with the Shaw Trust, a disability organisation, and with Stonewall (Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual organisation). We also collaborate closely with the other three Probation Areas in Wales and have a common All Wales Diversity strategy.
