How Probation Works

The National Probation Service for England and Wales

  • Assess the risk and need of offenders and provide reports to the courts on people convicted of offences to help Sentencers decide on the sentences they pass.
  • Manages offenders in the community by making sure that they keep the conditions of their Community Order and carry out the work that is planned during their sentence.
  • Provides interventions such as programmes to address offending behaviour, help with drugs or alcohol misuse and other needs in order to assist service users to stay out of touble in the future.
  • Supervise offenders who carry out Unpaid Work that benefits the community and is also a way of punishing the offender and help them gain new skills.
  • Works with Prisons during and after release and provides reports for the Prison to help decide whether a prisoner should be released into the community.
  • If offenders do not co-operate with the conditions of their Community Order or Licence, they are returned to Court or re-called back to Prison.
  • Liaises with Victims of serious crime and keeps them informed of prisoner's progress in Prison.
  • Works with other Agencies in the community to manage risk and contribute to the protection of the public.
